In a conversation moderated by Mo Elleithee, Executive Director of GU Politics, Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona spoke with Georgetown students on his views on the current state of the Republican party and what he saw as the future of the conservative movement. Covering policy issues of interest to students, Flake made sure to emphasize concern for the “vanishing middle” at the state and federal levels alike. “You always had a time when there were a lot of conservative Democrats — more conservative than the most liberal Republicans — and now you just don’t have many cross over, and that is dangerous.”
Having chosen to not run for re-election and unpopular in his opposition to President Trump, Flake continued to distance himself from where momentum and the White House was taking his party. “You can’t govern with the politics of resentment, and a lot of what we’ve seen with this populism is the politics of resentment.”
