In a conversation moderated by Jackie Kucinich, Washington Bureau Chief for The Daily Beast, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper covered his view on what he calls, “the possibility of politics.” Amid such polarizing times, he pointed to the various successes in Colorado for improving opportunities for their citizens. Attacking negativity and campaign feuds, he told students “Politicians define themselves by who’s different from them; they define themselves by how they can put down their opponent.” Instead, his state’s relatively positive politics can serve as an example for the nation.
As well, Hickenlooper entertained the unique idea during the 2016 election for a unity ticket between himself and Ohio’s Republican Governor, John Kasich. Though he liked the idea, ultimately “in terms of real political possibilities, it just won’t happen.” Nonetheless, Hickenlooper was optimistic that the spirit of collaboration and compromise would win out in national politics.
