Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget and a former Congressman, came to Georgetown to discuss the Trump Administration’s proposed tax overhauls. In a conversation with Cathy Koch (GRD ’94), a member of GU Politics’ Advisory Board and a tax policy expert, Mulvaney stressed the particular benefits of the tax plan targeted towards corporations and the middle class. “At the end of the process, we will look at the final product with that same prism that we did going into, which is: is the corporate tax rate lower and is the middle class lower and simpler?”
With the bill passing the House a week prior, Mulvaney expressed the administration’s sense of accomplishment and expectations for benefits – “Do the rich get richer? Absolutely. So does the middle class, and so does the poor.” While it cuts government revenue and adds to the deficit, he stressed that, historically and consistently, Americans like services more than paying for those services.
