On February 22nd, 2017, GU Politics hosted a panel of executives from POLITICO for a conversation with students on the dynamics behind modern journalism.
The changing media landscape has presented unique opportunities and challenges for journalism, especially in political coverage. POLITICO, founded a decade ago, and their leadership today reflects a “new guard,” where the editorial and business operations are led by women. This event sought to uncover the organization’s culture, both inside and outside the newsroom, alongside editorial decisions. Panelists included Poppy MacDonald, President, Carrie Budoff Brown, Editor, Alexis Williams, VP-POLITICO Live, Cally Baute, VP-Audience Solutions, and Anna Palmer, Playbook Co-Author.
Their advice? “Be tenacious. Knock on doors you don’t think are going to open.”
Moderated by Mo Elleithee, Executive Director of GU Politics, students and panelists discussed the 2016 election of Donald Trump, changing dynamics in print/digital media, and how both reflect broader trends in the US.
