State of the Disunion: A Conversation with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)

On October 1st, 2018, GU Politics welcomed Marco Rubio, Republican Senator from Florida, for a conversation on bipartisanship.

In a conversation moderated by Mo Elleithee, Executive Director of GU Politics, Senator Rubio will speak about the current political climate, state of bipartisanship, and health of our democracy. The Senator covered the growing trends of socialism and populism, Russian interference, and other challenges facing the nation. Throughout the talk, he championed bipartisanship, noting that 40% of the bills he co-sponsored in 2017 were written by Democrats. “If the only thing you know about another person is a political issue that you feel passionately about, it’s easy to dislike that person and to be angry at them, and that has become more true recently to” shaping where America is today.

Looking ahead to the 2018 Midterms and beyond, Rubio said, “We’re going to have to, by force, figure out a way to work on something that we can agree on, or it’s going to be bad for all of us.”
