Diverse Leadership: Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)

On May 28th, 2020, GU Politics joined with Senator Catherine Cortez Masto in a virtual discussion on diversity in leadership and government.

The Senator, first elected in 2016 and previously Nevada’s Attorney General, shared her experiences at the state and federal level, and how her views around diversity and equality alike were formed. She emphasized the point that, in the entire history of the US, ‘there were only ever 50 women in the United States Senate. I know that because I was number fifty.” Not limited to equality of the sexes, Cortez Masto pointed out similar disparities along ethnic, age, and religious lines. To work best, the government and its representatives should closely match the American public.

Regarding her recent withdrawal from former VP and presidential nominee Joe Biden’s list of potential running mates, Cortez Masto put it simply, “My fight is in the Senate on behalf of the state of Nevada and that’s my commitment, I can’t walk away from that right now.”
