On November 13th, 2019, GU Politics welcomed Seema Verma, CMS Administrator, and Dr. Jeff Colyer for a conversation analyzing the government’s duty, potential, and current role in American healthcare.
On Wednesday, Seema Verma, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), sat down with Jeff Colyer, M.D., GU Politics Fellow and Former Governor of Kansas, and moderator McCourt School Dean Maria Cancian. The speakers discussed the past and present roles of government in healthcare, leading up to how that will likely change moving forward.
Verma shared valuable insight as to how CMS is operating under the Trump administration to make healthcare more affordable. As well, Verma and Colyer agreed on the power of a free market economy as a positive and powerful influence in the US, noting the market will create a better healthcare system and address poor current government policies.
