Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum joined students in a conversation covering his 2012 and 2016 campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination. Finishing second to 2012’s Mitt Romney and ending his more recent campaign earlier in February, Rick Santorum offered substantial insight to the process, the lifestyle, and tough choices necessary in running for office. He shared an aptly poignant story of balancing paternal concern for his daughter, who suffers from chronic pulmonary disease, with the needs and desires of a campaign and its supporters on the eve of the Florida primary.
Considering primary motivation to get engaged in politics, Santorum noted that he always valued “people who were authentic,” and started his Congressional career because his Pennsylvania district’s Representative seemed to lack a consistent authenticity of values. In turn, he has sought to champion a concrete set of ethical standards over his career in the House and Senate.
