Senator Bernie Sanders, campaigning for the Democratic nomination for president, came to Georgetown to share his political vision for the future of America. With the talk centered on the theme of the influence of socialism throughout US history, the Senator focused significantly on the New Deal and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Sanders provided many comparisons to the changes the country went through then and what is needed now. “Almost every program he produced, every idea he introduced, was called socialist.”
Throughout his speech, Sanders kept focus on his class-conscious messaging. “This country has socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the poor.” Afterwards, students asked questions across a range of issues from healthcare and college affordability to climate change and terrorism. The event was moderated by GU Politics Executive Director, Mo Elleithee.
