Alongside the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the Latin American Policy Association (LAPA), GU Politics welcomed Mexican Senator Armando Rios Piter (MA ’02). He covered the alternate perspective on US-Mexico relations, including trade and immigration and larger foreign policy concerns, alongside offering insights into domestic Mexican politics. As a lawyer, economist, and former member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), Rios Piter announced in early 2017 his departure from the party and newly-independent stance.
First elected in 2009, Rios Piter discussed with students his career path since attending the university and the useful lessons learned along the way.
