Title: $100K Gift Establishes New Internship Fund for Students Exploring Careers in Media, Politics, Public Service

The Alexis and Laurence Pelosi Endowed Internship Fund will reduce financial barriers for students seeking summer internships, with the aim to diversify the fields of media, politics, and public service

The Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service at the McCourt School of Public Policy is honored to announce the creation of the Alexis and Laurence Pelosi Endowed Internship Fund, which will provide financial support for Georgetown University students whose unique background or personal experiences, when evaluated holistically, would contribute to diversifying the fields of politics, public service, and media.

The Alexis and Laurence Pelosi Endowed Internship Fund will support a summer stipend and experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students participating in public service-related internships, specifically:

  • Supporting Georgetown students who pursue unpaid internships or obtain an internship that provides a nominal stipend, by providing $3,000 in funding to support their living expenses, including housing and food
  • Providing innovative enrichment opportunities for Alexis and Laurence Pelosi Endowed Internship Fund Awardees through trainings and workshops conducted by leading public service professionals in the GU Politics network

A Legacy of Service

“Alexis and I had opportunities to intern in California government, Capitol Hill and the White House during college and it was an incredibly rewarding experience.  We’re excited to be able to help Georgetown students access those same opportunities.” said Laurence Pelosi, a 1997 graduate of the Georgetown Law Center and real estate investor.

“Laurence and I are proud to support students pursuing public service opportunities. This Fund at Georgetown’s Institute of Politics and Public Service will advance opportunities for underrepresented students who want to explore careers in public service, and deepen the impact they can have on our democracy,” said Alexis Pelosi, a lawyer currently serving in the Biden Administration.

The Alexis and Laurence Pelosi Endowed Internship Fund was established through a $100,000 gift to the Institute of Politics and Public Service from Alexis and Laurence Pelosi.

Building a More Inclusive Politics

The Institute of Politics and Public Service (GU Politics) runs a robust career program which offers Georgetown students workshops, training, and career chats throughout the year facilitated by leading professionals in the fields of media, politics, and public service. This generous philanthropy from Alexis and Laurence Pelosi expands the capacity of GU Politics to support students financially as they explore their own pathway to careers in politics and public service.

“Since day one, our Institute has worked to create opportunities that make politics and public service more accessible to students. Too often, unpaid or underpaid internships in government, politics, media, and public policy create steep barriers for students who want to explore opportunities in these fields. This gift opens the door for students of various backgrounds and supports another important step in our efforts to build a healthier, more inclusive politics,” said Mo Elleithee, the founding executive director of the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service. “We are deeply grateful to Alexis and Laurence Pelosi for their support of our undergraduate and graduate students.”
