Across a decades-long career serving South Carolina as Governor and Congressman, Sanford has experienced the varying highs and lows of political fortune. Most recently with a short-lived presidential campaign starting in September 2019 (ending in November), he challenged President Trump for the Republican nomination. Beyond resistance to Trump’s leadership of the Republican Party, Sanford focused his campaign on the issue of the ever-rising national debt. “We are at a much more precarious spot than people realize, and we are indeed at a tipping point.”
In his talk, the former Representative spoke on the particular political value, and current lack, of authenticity and principal. With them, one can better connect with their constituents and maintain ties to the impassioned reasons they entered the political arena. Without them, “you become a skeleton of a human being, and you’re walking around not really believing stuff you’re talking about.”
