As the White House Communications Director, Jen Psaki advises the President on communications strategy for issues ranging from domestic policy, to foreign policy to politics. She has led the reboot of the White House approach to media engagement in the final two years taking a more ambitious and creative approach to non-traditional and online media. And she leads a team responsible for crisis communications, traditional and digital media, speechwriting, research, event and policy planning.
Prior to her current role, Psaki served as the State Department Spokesperson conducting a daily briefing with members of the domestic and international media and serving as the primary spokesperson for the Department of State internationally. She was the primary strategic communications advisor to Secretary Kerry, traveling with him to more than fifty countries and over 600,000 miles. And she was on the front lines of every international crisis, coordinating messaging closely with senior members of the national security team across the Administration on a daily basis. Psaki also played a prominent role in modernizing the communications tools used by senior Department officials, including social media.
Psaki previously served as a senior communications advisor and traveling press secretary to President Obama during his successful re-election campaign. In this role, she was one of the primary on-air representatives on network, financial and cable news, briefed the national media daily, played a central role in media and communications strategy and was named by Politico as one of “50 Politicos to watch” in 2012.
Prior to joining the campaign, she served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy White House Communications Director responsible for helping run the day-to-day incoming news response and longer term strategic communications planning. Psaki was described by The New York Times as, “the unflappable and genial point-person ” to the media during the various crises of President Obama’s campaign and presidency.
She has also worked on many national and state political campaigns across the country in roles including Traveling Press Secretary for President Obama’s first presidential campaign, Communications Director for the Office of Congressman Joseph Crowley, and Midwest and Northeast Regional Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
