GU Politics was honored to host Democratic National Committee Chairman and former Secretary of Labor Tom Perez and DNC Deputy Chair Keith Ellison for a conversation moderated by GU Politics Executive Director Mo Elleithee on millennials and the future of the Democratic Party.
Our speakers and moderator were introduced by GU Politics Student Advisory Board Member, Santana Jackson, who has been involved with the organization since its inception. The conversation then began with a discussion about the identity of the Democratic Party and what being a Democrat means to both the DNC Chairman and Deputy Chair. Both of their answers touched upon the message of economic justice and a vision for an America where people working full-time jobs can lead good lives.

The conversation then moved to the issue of millennial engagement and the challenge of making the case to young voters who feel disengaged from the political process. DNC Chairman Tom Perez made the point that in today’s political atmosphere, it is crucial for young people to be active participants in the democratic process in addition to protesting and activism.

After the moderated discussion, students lined up to ask their own questions. Many of those questions touched on the future of the Democratic Party as it relates to organizational structure of the DNC and the development of a leadership pipeline to get more Democrats elected at the local level.
