Channeling the President: A Conversation on Presidential Speechwriting

by Cassie Saenz

On Monday, February 27th, the Institute of Politics and Public Service welcomed two former presidential speechwriters to speak on the panel “Channeling the President: A Conversation on Presidential Speechwriting.” The panel was introduced by sophomore in the College, Christian Mesa.

Cody Keenan (Former White House Director of Speechwriting, Obama Administration) and Marc Thiessen (Former White House chief speechwriter; Contributor, FOX News; Resident Fellow, American Enterprise Institute) discussed how they became speechwriters for President Obama and President Bush and their processes when working with their teams to craft major addresses like the State of the Union.

In preparation for President Trump’s address to Congress the next day, Keenan and Thiessen answered questions about the advice that they would give to both Trump’s team and to the Democrats in Congress leading into the next day and going forward.

This event was moderated by Robert Schlesinger (Managing Editor for Opinion, U.S. News & World Report; Author, White House Ghosts: Presidents and Their Speechwriters).
